Gum Disease in Women

Gum Disease in Women

Studies have shown that women practice better dental health, with more thorough and rigorous routines than men. Despite this fact, women are subject to more serious dental health risks than the male half of the population. According to research by Charlene Krejci, associate clinical professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, there is a clear link between female hormones and periodontitis, or severe gum disease.

There are several causes of hormonal change for women throughout life, including puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause. These changes actually have an effect on the conditions of the mouth, as well. When hormones increase in the system, so do oral bacteria. Women can be subjected to upwards of 700 different types of bacteria during these times. This can lead to severe gum disease, which naturally affects the teeth, as well. Bacteria in the mouth can also enter the blood stream. This can lead to serious medical issues, such as heart attack, stroke, bone loss, and pre-term labor.

Women can combat these risks by brushing and flossing daily, and visiting their general dentist regularly. When the signs of gum disease or other dental issues are detected early, they are easiest to treat.
